The only way you can access an AOL email account with an email client such as the Mail.app is by creating the account as an IMAP account.
If you aren't familiar with the IMAP account protocol, I suggest doing a Google search with 'IMAP' as the search criteria which will provide more information about IMAP than you probably care to know but will also provide the differences between an IMAP and POP account.
In addition, AOL does a few things that are different which are not the same when accessing a standard IMAP account with an email client such as Mail.
1) This isn't possible since all server stored mailboxes in Mail are synchronized with the server and you can't turn off or remove the server stored mailboxes provided/created automatically by Mail under/within the AOL account icon in the Mailboxes drawer.
2) Same as the answer to 1) but if you no longer use the AOL program or webmail access using a browser to send messages with your AOL account, you can transfer these messages from the server stored or AOL's online Sent items mailbox to a user created 'On My Mac' location mailbox. This process will store these messages locally on the hard drive and remove the messages from the server at the same time.
All server stored mailboxes in Mail are synchronized with the server when first launching Mail when connected to the internet and if you aren't constantly adding new Sent messages to AOL's online Sent items mailbox via AOL's program or via webmail access using a browser, this synchronization process should take very long but it probably seems that way when using a dial-up account.
Or go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Advanced tab for the account preferences at 'Keep copies of messages for offline viewing', select 'Don't keep copies of any messages' which should speed up the overall synchronization process but no messages in any server stored mailboxes will be available in Mail when not connected to the internet.
3) When Mail synchronizes all server stored mailboxes with the server including the account's Inbox mailbox, new received messages are not considered 'read' by AOL until you read the unread messages and/or mark unread messages as read. After doing so, AOL automatically purges messages from the account's Inbox mailbox in Mail - AOL does not provide access the 'Old Mail' mailbox when accessing the account as an IMAP account with any email client. This 'Old Mail' mailbox is available with the AOL program and when accessing the account via webmail using a browser only.
4) What you need to do is create a new Mailbox. At the menu bar go to Mailbox and select New Mailbox. If 'On My Mac' is not selected as the mailbox location, select it. An 'On My Mac' location mailbox is created and stored locally on the hard drive.
You can manually transfer all read messages that you want/need to save to the user created 'On My Mac' location mailbox. This process stores the transferred messages locally on the hard drive and removes the messages from the server at the same time.
To create a rule to do this automatically, at the menu bar go to Mail > Preferences > Rules.
Select Add Rule.
Enter a name for your Rule in the Description field.

At the first pop-up selection below, select Account and at the next pop-up to the right, select your AOL email account.
Select the + sign to the right to add another criteria.
